The lithograph : a good turn for an exceptional drawings

The lithographs made while Gustav Klimt were alive are practically nonexistent; some very rare copies can be found in different museums and in the most prestigious private collections. (As a matter of fact,Gustav Klimt only made one single serie in 1914).

Nowadays the art-work from Klimt has been reproduced to excess: in all the shapes, all the colours, and by using all the modern printing processes.

It is just a kind of “copy/paste” without feeling, and showing no consideration for the artist and his work.

Gustav Klim deserves better, much better.

Turning to the lithograph is a way to reconcile the original art work and its reproduction so that Klimt would have liked it ; it is a way to go to the heart of his inspiration with the same requirement, the same moves and with the very same period machines.

It is to see to it that this lithograph belongs to him, so that it may be a link between him and us.

Please bear in mind that the price of original art-works from GUSTAV KLIMT have amounted up to several hundreds of thousands Euros. Nowadays it is quite common to see on some web-sites some drawings, supposed to be original ones at prices ranging from 10 or 100 Euros…

Kind Reminder about the Lithography

Please note that a litho is not a poster or just another art reproduction. When designing a litho, strict technical and artistic standard requirements should be fulfilled.

However, a lot of basic and common reproductions are suddenly becoming lithographs without having the relevant quality. Adapted to fit any case, the word « lithograph » is nowadays used in an attempt to justify, to give credit and therefore to deceive a not well-informed buyer.

Invented at the end of the 18th Century, this technique is indeed a good means of reproduction but above all, it is a creation work.

To take a colourful example, this technique means quite a lot to the reproduction of drawings or paintings as much as the Roll-Royce company means to the car industry or Louis VUITTON to the fine leatherwork.

This is not a matter a chance if all the world’s greatest painters have adopted this technique.

The lithograph is fully hand-made such as a drawing or a painting (lines, shades and colours are drawn in the stone before being hand-printed on the lithographic hand-press).

By this way, the artistic process is preserved whereas it is upset when using the modern printing means that are eventually a simple “copy/paste” without feeling.

You must have understood by now …the lithograph is infinitely more than just a reproduction. Its exceptional design is a masterpiece in its own right.

When the Present revives with the Past

The work from Gustav Klimt has been reproduced to excess : in all the shapes, all the colours, and by using all the modern printing processes.
Except for some very few and very rare prints, admittedly most of these copies are of poor quality.

For the 150th Anniversary of Klimt’s birth, Stephane Guillosson from France Art Diffusion Gallery decided at the beginning of 2012 on the editing of 3 lithographs from original drawings. The Leopold Museum in Vienna and two art collectors have agreed on the project provided that it should be achieved in the respect of the Rules of the Art : with the requirements and under the very same conditions used at the time of the painter.

No more serigraphy, no more offset or digital printing, no more copy-paste. The only way to such an approach is indeed the process of Lithography.

Invented at the end of the 18th century, and used by all the world’s great painters, this process is now dying. Thus, France Art Diffusion has called on the “Survivors”, namely on the great names of the French Lithography.

Nicolas Draeger from Anthèse* Publishing House, in charge of one of the last Lithography workshops in Paris, still owning a 19th century hand-press and a lithographic flat printing machine dating from the beginning of the 20th century.

Gérard Dalmon*, one of the last craftsmen operating a lithographic flat printing machine and last but not least, M.F*, one of the last French Masters in the Lithography process.

Shown for the first time IN THE WORLD with a Lithography process, each drawing is stone-drawn again by Mario Ferreri and hand-printed, adding one colour after the other on a flat printing machine (a 1910 Marioni Voirin machine). With 40 copies being printed on special paper, numbered and signed by the Lithographer, this outstanding achievement is a masterpiece in its own right.

*M.F : Heir of an old craftsmanship.
He has worked for the greatest Lithography workshops in the world such as the one owned by Fernand Mourlot, Arte Maeght, … before making his mark in history by opening his own workshop. He was involved in the greatest modern artistic projects regarding Cocteau, Matisse, Lautrec, Schiele, Daumier, Colin....

*Gérard Dalmon : the living memory of old printing machines. He joined the craftsmanship of Lithography in the sixties, working for the most prestigious workshops such as Bellini or the Maeght Foundation before joining Anthèse Publishing House. He was a machine operator working for the greatest painters such as Chagall, Miró, Picasso...

*Nicolas Draegger : sixth generation of Master-Printers since 1830. He keeps on carrying on the family tradition for rarity in the publishing business and for lost printing processes. “Jazz” from Matisse, “Erotica” from Egon Schiele or more recently “Le Tumulte noir” from Paul Colin will undoubtedly lend him credibility.
